Eynesbury Rovers 1-2 Rothwell Town

ROVERS slipped to their second home league defeat of the season at the hands of ex-Southern League outfit Rothwell Town.

Adam Boothby scored a late consolation for Eynesbury but manager Matt Plumb admitted his side were well off the pace.

He said: “We were poor and just had too many who weren’t at the races.

“I felt there was more than enough on the pitch to beat them and I was surprised that, after the game, their manager said to me that we were the best side they’d played so far this season.

“You could tell they were delighted to leave with the three points, as they celebrated like they had just won the league.”

Craig Lanham, returning from injury, was unlucky not to give Eynesbury the lead inside two minutes when his shot struck the crossbar.

UCL new boys Rothwell took the lead moments later, as indecisiveness in the Eynesbury defence put Scott Kingsbury under pressure and his attempted clearance struck Kieran Linnett and went in.

The visitors doubled their lead early in the second period, with Linnett on hand to set up Jordan Henson, who fired past keeper Marcin Lubniewski.

Boothby’s goal 10 minutes from time gave Rovers a glimmer of hope as only the woodwork denied Dan Woodhead a last-gasp leveller.

Visiting skipper Chris Chambers had spurned a chance to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot after Joe Jordan tugged Matt O’Neil’s shirt in the area.

Eynesbury, 11th in the table, visit third-bottom Northampton ON Chenecks on Saturday and will be looking to secure a league double over the side they beat 3-1 in the reverse fixture on the opening day.
