ST Ives Town came back from 2-0 down to secure a point at Quorn on Saturday – but the promotion chasers need more than single points as they try to catch runaway leaders Holbeach Town.

The point in Quorn came five days after another single point from their 1-1 draw with Spalding United at Westwood Road. Now St Ives will need to win all six on offer from their two games against Holbeach.

“We let ourselves down in the first half,” said joint manager Jez Hall. “We had a dreadful 10 minutes.

“At half time there were a few choice words and in the second half we probably played the best we have all season. We came out with all guns blazing and we should have won it really.”

It was Karl Gibbs who got the equaliser – after his breathtaking volley which won them the point against Spalding – with Dom Lawless, left, scoring just after the interval to get the team back into the game.

In the latter stages Lawless missed a chance for 3-2 and Stuart Cobb also went close with a header.

“We have drawn too many games at home,” said Hall. “Our away record is the best in the division – but now we need to win both of the games against Holbeach, not just to keep the pressure on them, but to keep the pressure on Spalding as well.”

Spalding, of course, are third, six points behind the Saints, with Holbeach – who have not applied for promotion – 15 points clear at the top.

There was further drama at Quorn when midfielder Lee Ellison ended the game in goal with Nick Bennion forced off with a studded ankle following a clash with a striker.

But concerns that Bennion’s injury would keep him out so soon after Niall Conroy’s move to St Neots have eased.

“We will see how he is but he should be okay for Irchester on Saturday,” said Hall.

“It’s typical, we have two goalkeepers all season and the moment one leaves the other gets cropped.”
