Renowned non-league talent spotters Peterborough United are tracking St Neots Town star Ryan Hawkins.

The exciting Saints wideman spent two days on trial with the League One club last week.

He now faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering ankle ligament damage in St Neots’ 2-1 defeat at Stratford in the Southern League Premier Division last Saturday.

But Saints chairman Lee Kearns insists the club won’t stand in the way of any further interest in a player who is on a two-year deal at the Premier Plus Stadium.

Kearns said: “We were contacted by Ryan’s agent and asked if we would mind if he spent a couple of days training at Posh.

“He is a fantastic young talent and we agreed immediately.

“Unfortunately he picked up an injury last Saturday that is going to keep him out for a few weeks.

“But if Peterborough want to have another look at him, we will certainly work with them on that front.”

Norfolk lad Hawkins was part of the Norwich City youth set-up as a youngster before being released.

He made his mark in non-league with Dereham before earning a transfer to St Neots last summer.

Hawkins became the latest Saints player to be hit by their injury jinx when stretchered off in the early stages of their defeat at Stratford last Saturday.

Saints produced a much-improved performance despite suffering a sixth defeat in their last seven games and seeing their win-less run extended to 12 matches in total.

Academy manager Andy Davies took charge of Saints in that game and he will again be in the hotseat when they travel to Cirencester tomorrow.

Kearns is still to appoint a new boss to succeed David Batch, who resigned more than a fortnight ago.

Kearns added: “I think I’m right in saying we’ve been through five managers in the last four years. We have to ensure we are the right club for the man we want to bring in, as well as him being right for us.

“In an ideal world, I would like our next appointment to be one for the long-term, but we have a 16-game window remaining this season which could be really beneficial in determining if we are right for each other.

“I certainly don’t want to be in a position of having to deal with another change of management during a season.”

Bedford Town chief Jon Taylor has been linked with the St Neots post along with ex-Brackley boss Jon Brady.
