Huntingdon Town could receive a dramatic reprieve from relegation tonight.
The Hunts Post understands that Town could escape the drop from the United Counties League Premier Division – even though they finished bottom by a whopping 26 points last season.
League officials are due to meet tonight to finalise their constitution for the 2016/17 campaign and Town are sure to be on the agenda.
The promotion of champions AFC Kempston Rovers and the demise of Northampton Spencer has created the two required spaces in the Premier Division to be taken by Division One top dogs Peterborough Sports and runners-up ON Chenecks next season.
Huntingdon chairman Doug McIlwain insists he will gratefully accept any offer to stay in the Premier Division.
He said: “We want to play at the highest level of football we can.
“If the league and FA decide we can remain in the Premier Division, we will take it with open arms.
“The players learned throughout last season and I think we showed towards the end of the season that we are capable of being competitive at that level.”
Town endured a torrid season in which they won only two and drew two of their 42 league games, finishing with a tally of just eight points.
They also had three different managers during the course of the campaign with Ian Edge and Scott Witherall having spells in charge before the arrival of current boss Bob Warby at the beginning of February.
