Former St Ives Town striker Conor Washington’s footballing fairytale now has a new chapter.
Washington received his first taste of Euro 2016 football yesterday when sent on as a substitute midway through the second half of Northern Ireland’s 1-0 defeat against Poland in their Group C opener in Nice.
Washington was working as a postman and playing for Saints in the United Counties League when the last European Championships took place four years ago.
Since the 24 year-old, an ex-St Ivo School pupil, has risen from Step 5 of the non-league system to the international game.
He earned his fourth cap for Northern Ireland - a country he is eligible to represent through a grandmother - yesterday.
His side are in action again on Thursday when they face Ukraine in their next group game.
