The new season is little more than a week old, but Huntingdon boss Bob Warby has already visited virtually all points of the emotional spectrum.

Town’s campaign started with their now infamous 12-0 drubbing at fellow United Counties League Premier Division side Yaxley in an FA Cup clash 11 days ago.

But the dismay of that double-figures defeat was followed by the delight of victory in the club’s opening league game last Wednesday.

Warby watched his Town men triumph 2-1 away to a Peterborough Northern Star side also tipped to be involved in a fight for survival this season.

It was the first success of Warby’s reign which began back in February and was clinched courtesy of an Addie Staffieri penalty and a Jordan Brockett strike.

Then came the frustration of a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Leicestershire side Kirby Muxloe at Jubilee Park last Saturday.

A Huntingdon side already missing a host of players could certainly have done without their skipper, Brockett, failing to report for duty on a day when they conceded on the half-hour and hour marks.

The captain eventually contacted Warby to apologise late the following day with a clear-the-air chat then following.

“It‘s a good job I’m already bald and grey as running a club like Huntingdon would certainly lead to premature ageing,” joked Warby.

“We’ve only had three games so far this season, but we’ve already experienced a lot of different emotions.

“It just wasn’t us in the FA Cup game and it was very pleasing to see us bounce back in the way we did to win at Northern Star.

“Winning football matches is a great habit and it is something I’ve missed in my time as Huntingdon manager.

“We were not about to get carried away by that result though, and it was just as well given how poorly we played against Kirby Muxloe.

“It was another game we had hoped to be able to get something from, but our captain going AWOL didn’t help us.

“There is always going to be a draw-back with someone who has Jordan’s talent.

“He got in touch the following day to apologise and it is something we have since discussed and we’ll do what is right for the club.

“Jordan is part of a squad which I’m hopeful can perform well once we’ve got holidays, weddings, stag dos out of the way.

“I’m not going to knock lads for those though. We’ve picked players up from lower levels where the season often doesn’t start until September.”

Huntingdon’s season continues apace in August with another home outing tonight (Wednesday) when Newport Pagnell are the visitors to Jubilee Park.

They then go to Rothwell Corinthians on Saturday.
