Huntingdonshire stars Lauren Steadman and Clare Cunningham are preparing to go for gold at the Paralympics in Rio today.
Sawtry’s Steadman and Papworth-based Cunningham hwill do battle in the PT 4 category of the debut-making paratriathlon event.
Steadman’s selection was inevitable as the reigning British, European and world champion and the 23-year-old will start as hot favourite for glory, while Cunningham, herself a former world champion, could challenge for a medal.
Steadman, who has appeared in the last two Paralympics as a swimmer, said recently: “I know the position I’m in as world and European champion. I’m more than capable of bringing home the gold – so that’s the aim.”
Cunningham, 39, returns to the Paralympics stage an incredible 20 years after her last appearance. She competed as a swimmer in Barcelona (1992) and Atlanta (1996).
Cunningham said: “It’s all really exciting, I can’t wait to get out there and finish the job off. Training has been going very well so I’m in a really good position to give it my best shot.”
