Our look back at the sporting highlights of 2016 continues with July to September’s best moments . . .
JULY
Athletics: Hunts AC members Polly Smith (Under 20 Women’s 3,000m) and Harriet Bruce (Under 17 Women’s 80m hurdles) struck gold at the Eastern Counties Championships.
Trampolining: Carys Verdicchio, of the Huntingdon-based Rotations club, finished fourth in the 9/10yrs Elite category at the British Championships.
Boxing: Shona Whitwell, of St Ives Boxing Academy, picked up an international medal when finishing as runner-up in the female 60kg category at the Monkstown Box Cup, in Dublin.
Cricket: Big-hitting Aussie Blake Mills achieved a rare feat by smashing six sixes in an over during Ramsey’s victory at Orton Park in a Rutland League match.
Cycling: Rising St Neots star Jacob Hennessy claimed the biggest success of his career when winning the Skipton Grand Prix event – part of the British Cycling Elite Circuit Series.
Speedway: Huntingdon rider Danny King helped Great Britain to silver medals in the final of the World Cup at the National Speedway Stadium in Manchester.Bowls: Ed Elmore (Warboys) and Richard Wilson (Hemingfords) both completed honours hat-tricks at the Hunts County Finals. Barbara Clutterbuck (Hemingfords), Janet Chapman (Hemingfords), Sandra Day (Somersham) and Pauline Whitlesey (Somersham) all did doubles.
Motorsport: Papworth racer Sam Tomlinson starred at Brands Hatch as he took his first race victory in the BARC Mighty Mini Championship.
Sailing: Huntingdon duo Tom Proctor and Henry Hutchinson won the Mount Haes Trophy at the National Youth Regatta.
Fencing: Huntingdon star Matt Dalton won the Cambridgeshire county title – by beating clubmate Tim Bissell in the final.
AUGUST
Sailing: Huntingdon man Giles Scott made a glorious Olympic Games debut by storming to Finn class glory. The 29-year-old clinched gold with a race to spare.
Hockey: Former St Ives player Hannah MacLeod, who grew up in Buckden, helped the Great Britain women’s team to Olympic glory.
Gymnastics: Louis Smith collected his fourth Olympic medal when taking silver on the pommel horse in Rio. The 27-year-old was pipped to glory by Great Britain team-mate Max Whitlock.
Athletics: Former St Neots resident Robbie Grabarz missed out on a second Olympic medal when finishing fourth in the high jump in Rio.
Football: St Ives Town drew 1-1 against Stratford Town in their first-ever game at Southern League Premier Division level.
Martial Arts: Five members of Huntingdon & St Ives Tang Soo Do club – Katlin Thomas, Bradley Dearney, Katie Alexander, Jack Jones and Peter Dudgeon – won medals at the World Championships in America.
Bowls: St Neots talent Rebecca Moorbey was pipped in the Under 25 final at the Bowls England National Championships in Leamington by former Commonwealth Games medallist Sophie Tolchard.
Athletics: Shannon Flockhart added Southern Counties Championship gold to her collection of honours. The rising Hunts AC star won the Under 15 Girls’ 1,500m.
Triathlon: Beatrice Pauley (12), of Huntingdon BRJ Run & Tri, won the overall Tristar 2 category in the Eastern Region Children’s League series.
Bowls: Warboys White Hart completed a Durham Trophy hat-trick by beating Hemingford A 101-75 to win the Hunts county team crown for the third successive year.
SEPTEMBER
Paratriathlon: Pre-race favourite Lauren Steadman, from Sawtry, had to settle for silver at the Paralympics after taking a wrong turn during the Women’s PT4 event in Rio. Papworth lady, Clare Cunningham, finished in seventh place.
Boxing: Unbeaten St Ives prospect Bradley Smith captured his first professional title when stopping Czech opponent Richard Walter, in London, to lift the International Challenge lightweight belt.
Cycling: Holly Hoy (15) picked up two gold medals at the School Games. The Hinchingbrooke School pupil took the individual sprint crown and also helped Eastern England to the team time-trial prize.
Amputee Football: Goalkeeper Gary Marheineke helped England finish third in the Amp Futbol International Tournament, in Poland.
Cricket: St Ives missed out on the Tucker Gardner League Division Two title when leapfrogged by March on a rainy final day of the season, but Ryan Withers’ men did claim promotion.
Boxing: St Ives Boxing Academy fighter Tyler Goodjohn was beaten on points by holder Johnny Garton in an English welterweight title fight in London.
Wheelchair Table Tennis: Daniel Bullen, from St Neots, took silver in the School Games. He was pipped by Welshman Cellan Hall in the final.
Athletics: Richard Phelan collected three medals at the British Masters Championships. The 55-year-old Hunts AC member won gold in the high jump, silver in the pole vault and silver in the triple jump.
Gymnastics: Isabella Fleming won the overall Junior Level 2 title at the East Region Age Group Championships, in Ipswich. Fellow Huntingdon Gymnastics Club talents Teegan Milligan, Leda Rehus and Lucy Patten also won medals.
Cricket: Eaton Socon Under 19s won the Natwest Club T20 Regional Finals on home turf at Peppercorns Lane. They beat Stony Stratford and Southill Park to triumph in the Cambs/Beds/Bucks area.
Boxing: Shona Whitwell picked up another major medal when taking bronze at the European Youth & Junior Championships in Turkey.
