Man of the moment Corey Kingston has snubbed the advances of one of the biggest clubs in the area to stay at Huntingdon Town.

The red-hot striker has hit seven goals in his last two games to inspire Town to successive United Counties League Division One wins.

He netted four times as Brattan’s side beat Long Buckby 5-3 at Jubilee Park last Saturday – following up a 4-2 home win against Oakham the previous weekend when he claimed a hat-trick.

Kingston was the subject of an approach from St Ives Town, who play three levels further up the non-league ladder, last week. but has opted to remain a Huntingdon player for the rest of this season.

“Corey is a real asset to the club,” said Huntingdon boss Jimmy Brattan. “Scoring seven goals in two games is a terrific achievement at any level of football.

“I’ve known Corey a long time. He played for me in the past at Feeder in the Peterborough & District League and it was great to be able to bring him to Huntingdon earlier this season.

“He could have stayed at Pinchbeck on good money and been a squad player for a team who look like winning the title at our level. But he wants to be playing regularly and enjoying his football – and those things are happening at Huntingdon.

“It’s fair to say he is now a lot more composed in front of goal than in the past and that is a big reason why he is taking so many more of the chances he has to score.

“We allowed Corey to speak to St Ives last week after they made an approach, but he is keen to stay with us for the rest of this season at least. It shows a lot of loyalty to myself as his manager, and also to the club, after we showed faith in him.”

Richard Baines headed Huntingdon into an early lead against Long Buckby when converting a fourth-minute corner from Chris Down. Their advantage was doubled midway through the opening half when Kingston burst clear to claim the first of his four goals.

A number of other inviting chances went begging before Town were stung by goals either side of half-time – the second of which arrived from a penalty conceded by Callum Walter - as Long Buckby clawed their way level.

But Kingston ensured Huntingdon emerged victorious when striking three times in the space of 20 minutes to continue his sparkling form in front of goal. The visitors then claimed a late consolation.

Brattan added: “We didn’t take anywhere near enough of the chances we created while dominating the first half. It was disappointing to only be 2-1 up at the break and even more so to concede a silly penalty that allowed Long Buckby to get level.

“But I was in no doubt that we would win the game and Corey’s goals ensured that happened. We’re sitting in eighth place and are only four points off fourth, so we can’t complain.”

Huntingdon, who handed a debut to Jonny Hall against Long Buckby, hit the road this Saturday for a trip to Lutterworth Athletic.
