David Welch stormed to glory in the Open Sculls Band 2 category despite being made to row his final a second time.

Welch was deemed to have left his lane when beating a Deben RC opponent in their initial clash, but he promptly triumphed again by three lengths in the re-staging over the 600m course on the River Cam.

Welch had earlier seen off rivals from Beccles RC and Milton Keynes RC to qualifying for the final.

And there was also delight for a newly-formed St Ives mixed eight made up of Brianna Hout, Claire Schneider, Heather Eggett, Christine Cox, Chris Slater, Jon Dolby, Gary Gilbey and Paul Ashmore, and coxed by Rory Crouch, as they triumphed against Nottinghamshire opponents Devil’s Elbow.

Gilbey and Ashmore were beaten in the final of the Open Double Sculls while Crouch and Sam Hasted were pipped in the Junior 16 Double Sculls decider. Elliott Hammond went out in the second round of the Open Singles.
