CAMBS & HUNTS PREMIER LEAGUE CRICKET: Eaton Socon beat the wet weather and Wisbech, but there is no joy for other local sides

The local side triumphed against Wisbech by 10 wickets in Whiting & Partners Division One after breezing past a revised target on a soggy Saturday at Peppercorn Lane.

The visitors’ innings was cut short by rain after 36.4 overs with them having reached 138-4. Eaton Socon then had to hit 83 to claim victory and did in just 10 of their 22 allotted overs.

Joe Dawborn cracked six fours and two sixes in a swashbuckling 45no while captain Jonny Carpenter’s unbeaten 33 featured seven boundaries.

Eaton Socon had to settle for 25 points while two of their title rivals – Saffron Walden and Foxton – picked up maximum hauls of 30 points. They go to Foxton on Bank Holiday Monday.

Table-topping Saffron Walden’s success came at Godmanchester Town in a game marred by a serious injury.

Town player James Cowan suffered knee ligament damage while fielding as Saffron Walden reached 238-9 despite the best efforts of James Sykes, who bagged 4-39.

Godmanchester were always struggling in their reply with only South African import Josh Wesson (34) making any inroads as they were dismissed for 129.

They face another team in title contention - Sawston & Babraham - on Monday.

Ramsey’s slump continued as they suffered a fourth successive defeat.

They went down to a 109-run reverse at the hands of March with the visitors’ overseas player taking centre stage.

Sri Lankan all-rounder Saranga Rajaguru found Cricketfield Lane very much to his liking. He cracked 138 off just 105 balls as March piled up 295-9 before spinning his way to 5-37 as Ramsey were removed for 168.

Elliot Cafferkey (3-50) and Mark Saunders (3-58) were the most successful Ramsey players with the ball while Nikhil Gorantla top-scored with the bat as he fell two runs short of a half-century.

Kimbolton and Waresley were beaten by the weather as their basement battle had to be abandoned.

Captain Jason Redinger (52) and Joe Malton (50) both hit half-centuries as bottom side Kimbolton amassed 205-6 in their innings, but torrential rain then brought a halt to proceedings before Waresley could begin their reply.

St Ives saw their Whiting & Partners Division Two title hopes all but end by defeat at struggling Southill Park.

They went down by 56 runs after only being able to reach 158-9 in reply to their relegation-threatened hosts’ posting of 214-8.

Michael Speed hit 45 of the St Ives runs – his best return at this level – while opener Matthew Wells added 33.

Huntingdon & District also suffered defeat on their travels when beaten by 52 runs at Castor & Ailsworth.

Fine performances from Graham Hudson (4-27) and Faisal Javed (65) weren’t enough for the town team as they were dismissed for just 118 in pursuit of 170-7.

Eaton Socon and Godmanchester Town are back in action in Division One on Bank Holiday Monday in crucial games.

Eaton Socon travel to fellow title hopefuls Foxton while Town are at second-placed Sawston & Baraham, both 12.30pm starts.
