Manager Mark Spavins insists it is too early to class his Eynesbury Rovers Reserves side as Kershaw Premier Division title contenders . . . but his opinion could change before Christmas!
The Rovers second string reeled off a seventh victory in their last eight Cambridgeshire County League top-flight games when triumphing 2-1 at their boss’ former club Eaton Socon last Saturday.
They fell behind early in the second half to a Dom Mason goal, but turned the game in the final 10 minutes thanks to a Neil Morris leveller and a Ryan Baxter winner.
But Rovers Reserves were reliant on a stunning save from goalkeeper Andrew Wale in stoppage time to deny Eaton Socon man Ben Cole and complete their smash and grab.
Spavins’ men currently sit seventh in the standings, but they boast games in hand on every team above them.
They are within five points of second-placed Fulbourn, who they host on December 22 after first going to reigning champions West Wratting this Saturday.
Spavins said: “I wouldn’t say we’re title contenders at this stage even though seven wins in eight games is a great achievement for a new team.
“But the two upcoming matches against West Wratting and Fulbourn will give us some idea of whether or not we can potentially challenge this season.
“The really pleasing thing is that we have learned to win ugly – just as we had to do at Eaton Socon - and that is something which gives us confidence ahead of two big games.
“We were shocking for 80 minutes last Saturday but luckily we did enough in the last 10 to get the three points.”
Brampton were beaten by West Wratting last Saturday. Nick Garner found the net for the locals as they went down 2-1.
Eaton Socon, who had won four games in a row before being pipped by Eynesbury Rovers Reserves, now face another derby clash this Saturday when they make the short trip to the Premier Plus Stadium to take on St Neots Town Reserves.
