CAMBOURNE lost out in the battle of the promotion hopefuls, suffering their first defeat in 18 games.

Comberton United Reserves took advantage of two defensive errors in the first 20 minutes to take a two-goal lead into the break.

Rovers mounted a spirited fightback but were unable to find the equaliser after Matt Hacking blasted in from long range to make it 2-1.

With fellow promotion contenders Duxford United and Cambridge University Press Reserves also securing wins, the dream of promotion may well have slipped from Cambourne's grasp.

A top-two finish is only possible if other results go in favour of Rovers, but there is a glimmer of hope if CUP and Comberton Reserves draw their fixture this weekend.

Manager Adrian Winter remained positive in the face of such disappointment. He said: "A top-four finish is virtually guaranteed, which we definitely would have taken at the start of the season.

"If we continue to show the same levels of spirit and commitment we can still finish the season on a high."

Cambourne have a Bambridge Cup quarter-final against Great Chishill to look forward to on May 3, so there is still a chance of silverware.

Better news came elsewhere, with the Cambourne Rovers Sunday side securing promotion from St Neots & District Sunday Football League Division Two.

Prolific striker Trevor Symonds notched five times in the final two games of the season to cement a place in Division One next season.
