St Neots boss Matt Clements is targeting a mid-table finish for his side, after they rounded off a productive pre-season with a 2-1 win over lower level Bedford Town.

Jack Bradshaw’s free-kick was cancelled out by the visitors early in the second half, but Dylan Williams struck the winner minutes later to ensure the Saints ended their pre-season campaign on a high.

“It was a bit of a scrappy game to be honest,” said Clements.

“It wasn’t the most entertaining game I’ve been involved in and I certainly wouldn’t want to watch it back but there’s plenty of positives to take from it.

“We had a bit of a disjointed side, had a few away and a few injured, but we scored goals as we’ve been doing all pre-season and we got a win.”

It ends a prolific pre-season for the Saints, beating Mansfield and Stevenage amongst other sides, scoring 22 goals along the way.

“I’m really pleased with how pre-season has gone, we’ve got the signings in that we wanted,” said Clements.

“We’ve got a lot of goals in us up front, we’ve got strength in depth, we’ve got competition for places, we’re definitely in a better position than we were in when I came to the club at Christmas last year.

“We’ve got better depth, variety and quality in a number of areas.”

Clements is realistic about his side’s ambitions this season, insisting a good cup run and mid-table finish will be a step in the right direction.

“You always want to improve on last season, I’ll be looking at a finish at the top end of mid-table,” he said.

“It would also be very nice to get through a few rounds of the FA Cup to give something back to the fans of the football club.

“I want the club to progress from last year and as we move through the season my goals might change, but at the moment we have to target that mid-table finish.”

The Saints kick off their Southern League campaign on Saturday, as they get set to entertain newly promoted side Farnborough.
