WORK has started on doubling the size of the St Ives car park that serves the guided bus.
The expansion work at the park and ride site is part of a �2million scheme aimed at alleviating some of the congestion on the A14 – other improvements being separately funded by the government include the reworking of junctions at Spittals at Huntingdon and Girton.
The measures are a package aimed at patching up the A14, which is a major route linking the country with the docks in the east of the country, until money can be found to pay for a new road – likely to be a toll road and not ready for work to start for about another five years.
The park and ride work will increase parking spaces from 500 to more than 1,000 and will be finished by the end of March.
Councillor Ian Bates, Cambridgeshire County Council cabinet member for growth and planning, said: “By expanding the St Ives Park and Ride site we hope to encourage more people to steer clear of the over-used A14.”
The grant will also be used to pay for new variable message signs roads leading from Huntingdon and Cambridge on to the A14. These will warn drivers of hold-ups on the road.
