Business matters at the June meeting were kept short as a speaker was present. Two of the members were going to the annual meeting of the NFWI to be held in Cardiff and would report back next month. Members were delighted to welcome a large number of visitors from WIs in the area to hear Joan Lawrence of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Her dog Scampi came with her. She gave the history and principles of the organisation. The dogs used must have a very special temperament to succeed with the training required. Most come from rescue centres and are usually under three years old. Once chosen they are left with a trainer who takes them through many situations to be the ears for someone. Slides were used to show the techniques used, and the equipment available to assist daily living. She stressed the dogs were treated as loved pets, with lots of play and exercise. It was expensive to provide the training and, therefore, funds were always needed. The next meeting will be on July 6 at 7.30pm when Alan Lamb will talk about Stories from the Fens Anyone interested in joining the WI is welcome. For further information call 01480 462303.
