A woman pedestrian has died after a crash involving a car and a bus in St Ives town centre.

The emergency services were called to Market Road at 11.53am today (Monday) after the collision involving a silver Vauxhall Corsa and a Stagecoach bus.

Sgt Gordon Murray confirmed that a woman had died and another pedestrian had been seriously injured and taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

Two people inside the car suffered slight injuries. One other person was injured but did not require medical treatment.

Stagecoach East managing director Andy Campbell, who went to the scene, said: “Our ‘A’ service was coming past the front of the bus station at a very slow speed when a car came across the junction and hit a pedestrian on the pavement.

“They appeared to have their accelerator stuck so the bus stopped and the car ran into the bus. Unfortunately, there was a female pedestrian that was hit by the car and the impact sent her into the front of the bus.”

He said the driver of the bus, which had been Cambridge bound, had been left “pretty badly shaken up”.

Three ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team, a rapid response car and a duty officer, the East Anglian Air Ambulance, fire engines and police were sent. The road had to be closed off and diversions remain in place.

Police appealed for witnesses to come forward, in particular anyone who saw the Corsa in the Station Road or Market Hill area prior to the crash.
