THE ROUTE

IT’S an early start as the first runner will leave Meadow Lane at 7.54am.

Four torchbearers have been given the honour of taking the Olympic flame through St Ives. Following rolling roadblocks, the route will take the runners along Meadow Lane and into St Ives town centre along Cromwell Place, through Market Hill and along The Pavement and Crown Street to The Broadway.

From there the procession continues along The Waits to Ramsey Road, turning into Houghton Road before returning to the vehicle convoy at the junction with Hill Rise.

THE RUNNERS

The four runners are:

David Cleaver, aged 46, from Cambridge – a coach at Cambridge Rugby Club who is carrying the torch in memory of Joe Herrington, who died of sudden death syndrome.

Mark Fliegauf, aged 34, from Oxford – founder of Aiducation International UK which has awarded 24 scholarships to Kenyan high school students.

Nell Macleod, aged 28, from Willingham – a St Ivo School music teacher who helps people to recognise their talents and inspires pupils to love music.

Stuart Mitchell, aged 20, from Ely - born with Prader Willi Syndrome, a complex genetic condition best known for the insatiable appetite that leads to heart problems and diabetes, Stuart has become the first sufferer to win medals in the national disability swimming championships.

CELEBRATIONS

AN Olympic breakfast will kick off St Ives’s celebrations.

The town council and St Ives Town Initiative will be holding the Olympic-themed breakfast in the Corn Exchange throughout the morning.

After the torch passes through, sports teams will kit up for a parade on the same route, and the council is organising an event afterwards that will allow people to try out different sports. This will take place on the field opposite Slepe Hall.
