Police are advising motorists in Huntingdonshire to leave extra time for journeys this week as more than 30,000 people attend the Secret Garden Party music festival.

The event takes place in Abbots Ripton from Thursday, July 21, though to Sunday, July 24. Police say it is expected to be particularly busy on the opening day and that supermarkets in Huntingdon may be busier than usual during the duration of the event.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary says it has been working closely with event organisers and the local authority to manage the event and minimise the impact it will have on the community.

Superintendent Laura Hunt said: “The safety of people, both going to the festival and local residents, is our number one priority. However, we will not tolerate the behaviour of those who choose to use the event as an excuse to commit crime.

“We have been in regular contact with the festival organisers and the local authority to thoroughly plan our approach to policing the event. We will have extra officers on duty to ensure the festival does not impact on our ability to police the local area.

“I believe this and other key decisions will mean the event runs smoothly and causes minimum amount of disruption to the community.”

The force’s Twitter account, @CambsCops, will be regularly updated throughout the festival.
