MOVES to replace a rundown waste transfer station at Warboys have been welcomed, but protestors are continuing their fight against a potential second facility near the village.

Plans are to build a two-storey steel portal framed building to eventually replace the existing facility at the Warboys landfill site.

It will continue to be used to recycle building materials and timber from around the area once the rest of the landfill site has been shut down in 2013.

An application is due to be submitted for the new material recycling facility within the month, Cambridgeshire County Council officials have said.

In the meantime, landowners Woodford Recycling Services have applied for permission to extend the use of the existing waste transfer station until December 2015.

County councillor and chairman of the Warboys Landfill Liaison Group Victor Lucas said the new facility would improve the site.

He praised Woodford’s managing director Mike Farren for his co-operation with residents.

“The managing director has been extremely good in being very forthcoming with regard to issues at the site site. He has improved immeasurably the confidence in the way the site is developing.

“They have kept us absolutely abreast of what their proposals are. If they continue in the direction they are going to imrpove the site. It is a brand-new facility which will contain everything. We have confidence in both the ability to move that forward and the control of the site.”

But Cllr Lucas said residents continued to oppose plans for a second facility mooted in the minerals and waste plan developed by the county council and Peterborough City Council.

Officials have argued the facility at the Warboys Industrial Estate is needed to cope with the greater focus on recycling in the county.
