Private Alfred Herbert Ellis died of severe wounds aged just 22 on May 1, 1918. He was serving with the Second Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment, before which he had served with the Cyclists Battalion. Pte Ellis was the son of Alfred and Clara Ellis, of Grafham. He is buried in Vignacourt British Cemetery, in France, and his grave is looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commision. Pte Elliss medals were sold by Lockdales, the auctioneers of Martlesham, near Ipswich, and fetched £420, comfortably exceeding the estimate of £350. The medals included The British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the Death Plaque.
