A LORRY driver caught driving along the A14 nearly three times the limit has been jailed.

Kestutis Ruplaukis, 53, was spotted driving along the eastbound carriageway shortly before midnight on Sunday (September 1), drifting between both lanes as he travelled between Northamptonshire and Huntingdon.

Pc John Mayor caught Ruplaukis, of no fixed abode, driving the 44-tonne heavy goods vehicle erratically on his police car’s onboard camera. Pc Mayor called for back up and prevented other motorists from overtaking the lorry to stop the risk of a crash.

Ruplaukis was stopped just before the Brampton Hut junction and initially resisted arrest, kicking out at an officer.

The officer smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath. Ruplaukis gave a reading of 97 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35.

On Monday, September 2, at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court, Ruplaukis admitted driving an HGV with excess alcohol and obstructing a police officer.

He was jailed for 20 weeks and disqualified from driving for 36 months.

Pc Mayor said: “The footage shows just how bad Ruplaukis’s driving was and is a reminder of how dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol is.

“Being so out of control, especially in such a large vehicle, put other road users at serious risk of harm.

“Thankfully we were able to stop him before he was involved in a serious collision.”
