A BIGGER and more elaborate than ever Somersham Carnival took place on Saturday with a theme of anything green.

A grand procession of floats, walkers and vintage cars parading through the village returning to the Norwood playing fields, where the event was officially opened by Shailesh Vara MP for North West Cambridgeshire.

Among the highlights of the day's events were the Zenobia Egyptian Dancers, Somersham Tag Soo Do karate group and the Patricia Ball Dance Academy all performing in the arena. The Tug of War grand finale was won by the First Step Playgroup Dads who emerged the victors over the raining champions, Somersham Town Football Club.

Paul Brickett, carnival spokesman said: "We are absolutely thrilled with the turn out. We estimate that we had around 3,000 visitors, early reports fro our stallholders indicate that they have had a bumper year despite the recession. We are hugely grateful to all contributors, sponsors and stallholders for all their efforts to make the 2009 carnival a great success."

The week of village events ended on Sunday with the family cycle marathon, won again by John Goodwin in the senior category, and his son George Goodwin also retaining his title in the junior section. Seven teams competed in a junior five-a-side football tournament.
