AVIATION enthusiasts were given a day to remember at the Little Gransden Airshow with a mix of rare planes and flypasts from a Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster and an Avro Vulcan.

The crowd stood in anticipation as it spotted the Vulcan, the only flying example of the long-range bomber, circling in the distance preparing to make its second appearance at the show in aid of Children in Need after its debut last year with four laps of the South Cambridgeshire sky, moments after a display from a sister Avro Anson.

There were also appearances by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Spitfire and Hurricane, as well as later in the afternoon the Avro Lancaster.

The crowd closed their eyes as the stunt planes narrowly avoided each other in some great displays from six-time world champion Mark Jefferies, Britain’s top female stunt performer Lauren Richardson, the Trig Aerobatic Team, the Swip Team and a little and large stunt show with the smaller, yet more powerful, plane performing a pirouette on its tail while in the air amongst its many tricks.

Dennis Neville’s Flying Circus marked England’s Ashes win with a cricket match, bowling from their planes to a batsman on the ground, flying under two washing lines and clearing the sky of balloons.

Amongst the fun and frivolity in the air, there was a moment of remembrance with a ceremony to mark those who lost their lives while fighting for their country.

The show ended with a World War Two veteran Spitfire reconnaissance plane and a rare Hurribomber - a Hurricane fighter/bomber.

Dave Poile MBE, who organised the show, thanked the crowd for turning up and also the volunteers who helped kept the event running despite the torrential downpour the day before.

The organisers will reveal how much money has been raised for Children in Need in a few weeks.
