VIDEO & GALLERY: Godmanchester goes cartoon crazy for Gala Day

The town’s annual Gala Week, organised by Godmanchester Community Association, came to a colourful conclusion at the weekend.

On Saturday (July 6), people dressed as cartoon characters for a parade and fancy dress competition, with the 1st Godmanchester Beavers winning the best float prize for their Smurf outfits.

A Squire racing car which once belonged to Second World War pilot Squadron Leader Matthew Drummond Wilson, who died in a plane crash in Godmanchester in 1942, went on display. Visitors included Sqn Ldr Wilson’s son Drummond Wilson Thorne.

There was entertainment throughout the afternoon, including Cambridge Model Boat Club, whose members brought along 30 to 40 vessels, along with a shark’s fin, to sail in The Causeway.

Model boats made by Godmanchester youngsters had their maiden voyage and demonstrations included the Hartford-based Blue Vision Twirlers.

Then on Sunday (July 7), the week’s proceedings were brought to a close with a duck race, featuring about 1,000 plastic ducks, and a picnic in the park.

Live music was provided by, among others, singer Tor Hills and The Singing Waitresses, Take That tribute band Totally Take That, sca band Big 10, Violet Bones and On Route, as well as children from the town’s two school choirs.

Community association chairman Stephen Spencer said: “A huge thanks to the people who turned up. We sold out of beer on the Sunday, towards the end.

“The feedback has all been very positive. A number of people were saying how they enjoyed living in Godmanchester because we have these community events.”
