A 28-year-old man was set upon by a group of up to 10 people after trying to defend his friend.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in St Neots.

The 28-year-old victim was set upon by a group of up to 10 people after he tried to defend his friend.

The group had verbally abused the victim's friend, a woman, as they walked across Waitrose car park at about 1.45am on Sunday (November 14).

The victim told them to go away, but the group turned on him as he walked through the alleyway between the High Street and the Pig 'n' Falcon pub.

He was pulled to the ground where he was punched and kicked to the head.

He was taken by ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, with serious injuries where he remains.

Detective Constable Karin Peters, investigating, said: “This was a sickening, unprovoked attack on a man who was simply standing up for his friend. He suffered serious injuries after being kicked in the head while he was unconscious.

“Despite the time of the incident, the area was fairly busy at the time and I'm sure many people would have seen the group before or after the attack.”
