Primary school children were distraught after vandals destroyed the fruit and vegetables they were growing.

At a harvest assembly on Monday, pupils at The Ashbeach School, in Ramsey St Mary's, were due to show their parents pumpkins they had been growing in the school allotment.

Instead, acting headteacher Hayley Challinor broke the news that the garden had been vandalised the previous day.

Mrs Challinor told The Hunts Post: "The children were shocked and disheartened. They had put a lot of hard work into growing the fruit and vegetables. Their parents and staff, who also put in their effort, are also upset.

"All the pumpkins we were growing for the harvest assembly were smashed, all the apples were pulled from the trees and everything else growing was pulled from the ground.

"We were meant to be handing over the food we grew to the Ramsey Day Care Centre. Fortunately, one of our parents who heard about it rang Tesco and they gave us two big bags full of goods for us to take there instead."
