A historic honour will be bestowed on military personnel next year when the freedom of the St Neots is granted to the American air force at RAF Alconbury and the Royal Anglian Regiment.
At a meeting of St Neots Town Council on September 12, councillors voted unanimously in favour of the tradition which recognises the work of the armed forces and their contribution to the community.
This follows Huntingdonshire District Council’s decision to give the Freedom of the District to 423d Air Base Group of RAF Alconbury and RAF Molesworth in April.
In addition, hundreds of people descended on Huntingdon last month for a march to celebrate RAF Wyton and the World War Two Pathfinder veterans being given the freedom of Huntingdonshire.
This will be the second accolade for the Royal Anglian Regiment which was granted the freedom of Huntingdon by Huntingdon Town Council in 2010.
St Neots Town Council suggested marking the occasion with a parade through the town in June – possibly to coincide with Armed Forces Day.
Town clerk Ed Reilly said: “The town is recognising what the armed forces do and what these regiments in particular have done.”
