The Huntingdon branch of the Royal British Legion could be forced to fold unless it can find new members.

An urgent appeal has been made for people to come forward and join so it can continue to support armed forces veterans, as it has for the last 93 years.

Branch secretary Judith Armstrong said they were desperate for new recruits.

“Most of us think of the Legion and our older veterans but, of course, with more recent conflicts the age of a veteran is sometimes just a teenager and we still need to support all that need out help,” she said.

“If we are unable to recruit new younger members we will have no option but to close the branch.”

Huntingdon Royal British Legion was formed in November 1921 to provide support, assistance and friendship for those who had returned from serving in the First World War.

Currently, there are about 30 members but only five were able to attend the last meeting.

Despite the lack of numbers, all welfare requests have been met.

Closure would mean that the Huntingdon branch would cease to exist and its standard, the ceremonial flag bearing the branch colours, used at events such as Remembrance Day, would have to be “laid up”.

In a bid to avoid having to close, a recruitment evening will follow the branch Annual General Meeting which takes place at the new community room at the Tesco supermarket, Abbots Ripton Road, Huntingdon from 7.30pm on Tuesday, November 4.

Information about the Legion will be available and staff will be able to answer questions.

“Anyone can join, you do not need to be armed services or ex-service members. All we ask is that you agree with our aims and want to help and support all our service personnel,” added Ms Armstrong. “With just a little help we could make our centenary.”
