FIREFIGHTERS have left the scene of a straw fire in Ramsey St Mary’s that has been burning since last night (Sunday).

A stack of 3,200 tonnes of straw caught fire at about 11pm, and crews were still tending to the blaze on Daintree Road this morning.

Heavy smoke is issuing from the fire, and the fire service is advising motorists on the B1040 to take care in the area.

A crew from Ramsey was first at the scene, and requested assistance from crews from St Ives, Whittlesey and Yaxley to deal with the fire.

Nearby residential buildings were evacuated, and 200 cattle were removed from farm buildings for their own safety.

As of 3pm today (Monday), the fire service reported that crews had left the scene but would be returning at regular intervals, and that the fire was burning in a controlled manner.

An investigation to determine the cause of the fire is yet to be completed.
