FORMER Huntingdon town councillor, Trish Shrapnel, returned to office after a narrow victory in Thursday’s (September 13) by-election.

The 59-year-old Liberal Democrat candidate was contesting the Huntingdon East seat which became vacant earlier this year following the death of Conservative Councillor John Skerry.

Mrs Shrapnel beat Mr Skerry's fiancé, Marion Nightingale, by 18 votes, with 526.

Labour's Robert Pugh came third with 226 with Derek Norman of the UK Independence Party gaining 213 votes.

Mrs Shrapnel, of Coldhams Crescent, told The Hunts Post: "It's fantastic to be back.

"You can never be too confident and it was close, but I now plan to listen to residents to see what they want for the town."

Mrs Shrapnel will attend her first town council meeting on Thursday (September 20).
