On day nine of the Chris West murder trial, the jury were told the man accused of killing him would not be giving evidence.

Defence QC, Isabella Forshall, told Cambridge Crown Court that Kai Nazir would not be going into the witness box and she would not be calling any defence witnesses.

Judge David Farrell QC said the jury would be entitled to draw “such inference from his failure to do so”.

Earlier, the jury were shown a blood-stained hooded top worn by Kai Nazir on October 28, last year.

Detective Constable Verity McCann walked over to the jury box and showed the eight men and four women, the garment, which had Daniel Berryman’s blood on one of its pockets.

The jury were also told that Nazir has a previous conviction for threatening behaviour in 2016 and that he “attributed this to his ADHD”.

At the end of the day’s proceedings, Judge Farrell released the jury and asked them to return on Tuesday.

Nazir, 20, of The Crescent, in St Neots, is charged with murder in relation to Chris West; attempted murder, with an alternate charge of grievous bodily harm with intent, in connection to Daniel Berryman and a fourth charge of having a bladed article, all of which he denies.

The two incidents took place at the Monkfield Arms pub, in Cambourne, just after midnight on October 28, 2017, during a Halloween party.

Mr West suffered 12 stab wounds and the jury has been told that two of his chest wounds were capable of causing him fatal injuries.

It is the prosecution’s case that Mr Berryman suffered life-threatening injuries, inflicted by the defendant, and would have died without prompt medical treatment.
