European visitors joined together to plant a tree marking 40 years since Huntingdon twinned with Salon de Provence in France.
The French guests and others from Huntingdon’s twin towns in Germany and Hungary gathered in Bloomfield Park on Saturday (June 14) to plant the Cercis tree. The continental counterparts were treated to a full itinerary of events including visits to the Raptor Foundation and Magdalene College, Cambridge, a buffet lunch and an evening of jazz.
“The sun came out and it was a great day,” said Huntingdon mayor Councillor Bill Hensley. “It was really good to see all the people I met last year in Salon.”
Cllr Hensley praised the French town for its traffic management and the use of space above shops for residential purposes which he hopes to learn from.
Salon was the first town twinned with Huntingdon when the charter was signed in 1974.
The partnership has continued to grow and pupils from St Peter’s and Hinchingbrooke schools will visit the French town later this year.
