Tools and equipment worth thousands of pounds have been stolen from St Ives Town Council’s grounds maintenance depot.

Thieves broke into the depot, at Hill Rise, St Ives, over the weekend and stole equipment including mowers, strimmers, tools, fuel and even a trailer.

Town clerk Alison Benfield said the strimmers alone were worth about £3,000.

"We are still trying to work out the full value of all the property, which we will have to replace," she said.

Mrs Benfield said that larger mowers had been left behind at the depot.

"Fortunately, there is still plenty of work which our team can do and the hot weather has meant the grass has stopped growing, so it probably won't need cutting for another week," she said.

The police have been informed about the break-in and the council has started the process to replace the missing equipment.

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to contact Cambridgeshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
