Friends and family of Tom Walker gather for annual golf fundraising event in St Neots

A fundraising committee, led by Tom’s family and school and university friends, has organised a golf day on September 22 and are hoping it will be their biggest event yet. The aim is to take the money raised at the golf day events over the £50,000 mark.

Tom died in March 2009, aged 26, after a tough battle with a rare cancer. Every year, more than 50 golfers gather to remember him and raise money for the charity on what would have been his birthday.

Nina Walker, Tom’s sister, said: “The golf day has raised £45,000 so far for the Teenage Cancer Trust, which we chose to support after Tom passed away. We are especially proud that this money has gone directly to help set up the unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, in Cambridge, for teenagers and young people with cancer.

“We have received amazing prizes for our auction and raffle from various shops and businesses in and around St Neots and would like to thank them for their generosity.

“The golf day means a huge amount to everyone involved and it is really important to us to remember Tom.”

Tom was a keen sportsman and played cricket for Eaton Soon, football for Priory Parkside, rowed for St Neots and played korfball in Cambridge, after playing for his university in Sheffield. Collectively, his friends, family, work colleagues and teammates have raised close to £150,000 since he passed away for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

This year’s event will include the annual round of golf at Wyboston Lakes and a party in the evening at St Neots Football Club, with a live band. If you would like to support the event, contact Nina by email: twwfundraising@gmail.com.
