The idea was to showcase the number and variety of activities going on in Thaxted and encourage residents to 'shop around' and perhaps embark on a new hobby or interest.

Among the clubs to choose from were brownies and beavers, badminton, bowls, book clubs and bell-ringing. There were 52 stallholders who filled Thaxted Parish Church with their displays.

A spokesman for the group said: "Everyone was welcome, and there was a festive atmosphere enhanced by the renowned Friends of Thaxted Church cake stall. The event is sure to be repeated."

The fair coincided with the Uttlesford District Council initiative to improve community well-being in the district by providing an Essex clubs and societies map so that people can easily access activities that interest them.
