THE tradition of giving out bread to widows and widowers in St Ives takes place tomorrow (Thursday January 11).

The distribution will be at the Free Church, St Ives, between 10.30am and noon, when a maximum of 225 bags will be distributed. Those eligible to participate are widows and widowers who live within the parish boundary.

The tradition goes back to the 1650s when Robert Langley, a former mayor of the town, died and left money for the purchase of bread to be distributed. This has been changed over the years and the bags e distributed contain sugar, tea, butter and a packet of biscuits.

The current Mayor and Mayoress of St Ives, Councillors Doug and Julie Dew, will be attending the event.
