A SWAN was trampled to death by cattle on St Neots Common on Monday morning.

The incident comes just weeks after a 58-year-old man suffered serious injuries while walking across the common.

Concerned onlookers called the police as the swan was trampled at around 8.15am.

Builder Trevor Polfrey called The Hunts Post after he saw the incident from his van as he stopped at traffic lights on the way into the town centre.

“The cows were herding it around and stamped on it. There must have been 30 or 40 cows,” he said.

“It makes you worry because if it had been a child it would have been killed.”

Cambridgeshire Police confirmed that officers were called to the incident shortly before 9am. Representatives from the RSPCA also attended, and staff from Wood Green Animal Shelters arrived to remove the body of the swan at 10am.
