The 69-year-old was taken ill whilst returning from holiday this week. Cllr Reynolds was local member for the Bar Hill Division, which also includes Boxworth, Dry Drayton, Girton and Lolworth. He joined the council in May 1981 and held senior positions in the authority as well as outside bodies and partnerships. He and his wife Diana are well known for their work with the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind Association who they were puppy walkers for. As well as raising money for the charity they would look after the trainee puppies for a year before the dogs moved onto further training. Cllr Reynolds was chairman of the police authority from 1994 for 10 years and served as chairman on the board of directors for Renewables East. He was also chairman of the East of England Regional Assembly. He served in the Cabinet and was previously deputy leader of the council as well as deputy leader of the Conservative Group. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. The county councils flag will fly at half-mast for the rest of the week and on the day of his funeral. Councillor Kevin Reynolds, chairman of Cambridgeshire County Council, said: Councillor John Reynolds will be sadly missed by the council and our thoughts and sympathy are with his wife and family at this very tragic time. John was a stalwart and statesman-like member of the council for 33 years, holding senior positions in the cabinet, police authority and regional bodies. But he also remained dedicated to his primary role of representing the local people of his division and at almost every full council would be on his feet to raise an issue on behalf of his constituents. Many of us, both officers and members alike, will remember with fondness how he would bring to meetings one of the many Guide Dog puppies he and his wife looked after. His support for this charity and the tireless work he carried out for the council epitomises how public spirited he was and his drive to achieve the best for the community as a whole. He will be fondly remembered and we will miss him and his wise counsel.
