String of deliberate fires in St Neots

ARSONISTS wreaked havoc during a fire-filled weekend in St Neots.

Huntingdonshire crews had to deal with multiple calls within the space of a few minutes during freezing temperatures in the small hours.

Police say they are looking at the incidents “collectively” but want to keep an open mind during their investigations.

The first call out came at 3.45am on Sunday (December 5) when a fire started in a shed in Cambridge Gardens began to spread to an adjoining house.

At the same time crews from Gamlingay and Papworth were fighting a garage fire in Duck Lane, less than half a mile away.

And as if that wasn’t enough, fire fighters from Huntingdon and St Neots battled a seven tonne removal truck that had been set alight in Levellers Lane, Eynesbury at 5.20am.

That incident took more than an hour to bring under control, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

Earlier in the weekend crews also attended a deliberate car fire at 3.47am on Saturday (December 4), as well as a fire to a bus shelter at 8.25pm the same day which was said to be accidental.

A police spokesman said: “We are aware of a number of incidents in the St Neots area over the weekend.

“We are looking at the incidents collectively. However we are keeping an open mind at this stage. Investigations are ongoing.”
