A RUGBY clash between Huntingdon Stags All Stars and RAF Brampton Eagles on Sunday raised more than 1,000 for Help for Heroes.

A RUGBY clash between Huntingdon Stags All Stars and RAF Brampton Eagles on Sunday raised more than 1,000 for Help for Heroes.

An All Stars team of players aged from 17 to 61 – and including three father-and-son pairings – managed to get the better of their RAF Brampton counterparts 21-5 at Huntingdon Racecourse.

More than 200 people turned out for the free event, which raised money through donations, a club raffle and the sale of H4H merchandise.

An auction at the Stags Sportsman’s Dinner will raise the 1,000 total further, and the club will also make a donation from its receipts on the day.

Despite the home side’s victory, All Stars skipper Patrick Goldsworthy said the greatest success of the day had been the money and awareness raised for the charity for injured military personnel.

Mr Goldsworthy said: “It was great to win the game, but the more important things were raising money for Help 4 Heroes, the Stags camaraderie on and off the pitch and getting three father/son combinations to play together.”

To include all Stags in the event, junior players ran the lines and took conversions for the home team.

The event was such a success it could become a regular fixture in both clubs’ calendar, according to Stags chairman John Doonan.

“It was a competitive game, but also a lot of fun. Our full thanks go to the Brampton Eagles for making a great afternoon of rugby, and starting something we would like to build on.

“There is a strong link between rugby and Help for Heroes, and we are very pleased to be able to do our small bit.”
