Stories of the untold part played by women from the St Neots and surrounding areas during the First World War are being sought as part of a British Legion campaign.

And the most inspiring account will be celebrated on a giant banner hanging from the town's new Self Store building in Allington Road.

Self storage managers across the country will be joining the Royal British Legion's 'Thank you' campaign, which marks the centenary of the end of the war, and in particular they want to highlight the key role played by women.

Jim Williams, general manager of Self Store, said: "My great grandmother, Daisy, who worked in a munitions factory in East London, was one of the many women who served our country during the First World War.

"It is a privilege for us to act as a gateway for local people to share memories of past local female heroes, and we are proud to work with other members of the Self Storage Association UK to collectively keep their histories alive. Whether you have a story to share about your mother, auntie, grandmother, or great grandmother, we would love to hear from you."

Emma Chesterton Kay, a board member of the Self Storage Association, said: "It is no secret that women formed the backbone of the war effort during the 1914-18 Great War. From making ammunition to serving at the front, their courage, determination and resilience kept together a nation torn apart by war.

"We hope that this initiative will acknowledge and celebrate the lives of these extraordinary women."

Catherine Davies, head of remembrance at the Royal British Legion, added: "One of our key ambitions this year is to highlight the contribution of the whole First World War generation.

"Women played an utterly essential role in the war effort, seizing the opportunity to prove their worth and take another step towards getting the vote. Each and every one of them deserves our thanks."

Organises want to hear the women's stories from St Neots and across Huntingdonshire and the campaign will last for 100 day, one for each year of the centenary. All nominations should be sent to WomenWeThank@ssauk.com #WomenWeThank.
