The 42-year-old of Priory Hill, St Neots, has been building up to the challenge for years but he now has a date confirmed and will fly out to Iceland on April 5. There he will take on a 300km journey across Vatnajokull, which includes seven active volcanos.

Together with three other snow kite enthusiasts, Mr Rose hopes to reach the finish line in a week to 10 days.

The expedition will raise money for spinal cord research foundation Wings for Life. Mr Rose wants to help others after he has was paralysed from the chest down when broke his back in a skiing accident in 2000.

Since then, he has won multiple sporting accolades including medals at the Torino Winter Paralympics in 2006.

He said: “I enjoyed a little bit of time off after being a full-time athlete and I wanted to spend a bit of time with my family but I got itchy feet. I am more nervous this time because I have never done it before – it is a total unknown. It is going to be physically very tough – we will be kiting for six to eight hours a day. The weather could be -20C and 40-50mph winds as well as really bad visibility where I don’t know where my team is. It could become real hell.”
