St Ives student Angharad Pugh is already looking forward to driving a herd of sheep across London Bridge to celebrate becoming a Freeman of the City of London.

Ms Pugh, 22, hopes she can exercise her ancient right to drive the livestock across London’s oldest river crossing next year, at the Corporation of London’s annual sheep drive.

The former St Ivo pupil was made of freeman of the city after winning a prestigious competition.

She was studying for a degree in textile design at Derby University when she was encouraged to enter a competition organised by the Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters.

The company belongs to the City of London Corporation and can trace its history back to 1589.

Every year it asks students to enter the Howard Ellis Award and this year, Ms Pugh’s design and development of fabric into a pair of knitted boots won her first place.

As a result, she was afforded a place with the company and was offered the freedom of London.

She said: “It’s a fantastic honour to be made a freeman. A special ceremony was held at the Guildhall in London back in August and I had to give a speech.

“Places were booked up to drive sheep across London Bridge this year but I hope to be able to get a place next year.”
