A St Ives man will take on a 100-mile cycle ride in memory of his wife who died suddenly at the age of just 28.

Shaun Yost, 50, a retired Army intelligence analyst, will undertake the Ride 100 through the capital tomorrow (August 10) from the Olympic Park to the finish line at The Mall in aid of SADS UK, a charity which aims to save the lives of those struck by Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome.

Mr Yost’s wife Sue died in March 1995 from the condition which causes the heart to go into a dangerous rhythm, leading to cardiac arrest. At the time, Mrs Yost, who was a linguist in the Army, was posted out in Cyprus. Mr Yost was returning from a four-month tour in Bosnia on the day of her death. The couple had been married just under four years.

He said: “Outwardly Sue showed no signs of the internal problem she had. She was an extremely fit individual, who participated in many differing sports and activities both prior to, and after joining the Army.

“She was on a day off in the swimming pool just doing lengths and she suddenly just stopped. They dived in and got her out and got some medical assistance to her very quickly but there wasn’t anything they could do.”

Since her death her mother, Anne Wilson of Oswestry, Shropshire, has been supporting SADS UK’s Big Shock campaign to put defibrillators into all schools and has donated seven in her area.

Mr Yost is aiming to raise about £1,200 towards the project.

He added: “To have them there would be fantastic because there wasn’t anything like that available for my wife.”
