MORE people turned up to watch the Olympic torch relay in St Ives than in Huntingdon, according to official figures.
Cambridgeshire County Council says that around 14,000 turned up to catch a glimpse of the flame in a very wet St Ives morning but six miles west, in Huntingdon, there were between 10,000 and 13,000 visitors.
St Ives mayor Debbie Townsend said she wasn’t surprised that the town attracted more people. “It was great that St Ives came out to see the torch. When I woke at 6am, there were people already walking to the centre to get their place.
“The fact that the torch was in St Ives earlier makes the numbers even better.”
