Sports clubs in Huntingdon are set to be consulted on a possible move to a new facility as part of a plan which could create more burial space in the town.

At a meeting of Huntingdon Town Council on January 5 it was announced that discussions would be arranged with all teams using council land after it was estimated the authority would not be able to accommodate any more burials by 2020 if a new site was not found.

Mayor of Huntingdon, Councillor Daryl Brown, said: “That would be part of the options appraisals, we need to increase space to get future supply for burials, we need to look at all the options and this could be part of that.

“We will be engaging with members of various sporting clubs to talk with them about the options we may have. At this stage we want to talk to the various sporting parties on these options.”

As part of the proposal to move sports clubs from sites including Sapley Road, Jubilee

Park, and St Peter’s Road, town clerk Philip Peacock will be speaking with officials from Sport England to discuss what is required for each sport and the availability of land.

“The idea we had as a council, if we are going to look at new sports facilities, is that we should talk to new partners and possibly create a facility for all the sports team under one roof,” Cllr Brown added.

“We want to get all of the clubs together and ask them what do they need from the town and what future needs do they have.”

The council has assured all clubs they will not be ending leases on existing sites if a possible move is not agreed upon.

Last year The Hunts Post revealed the town council had started talks with clubs at

Jubilee Park, in Kings Ripton Road, and Cemetery Development Services Ltd (CDSL) about the potential to build a cemetery on the site.

“Pre-application discussions have taken place with planners and pre-application discussions will take place regarding a number of sports facilities,” said Mr Peacock.

It was then unanimously agreed by members that survey work should be carried out on Jubilee Park, the home of colts team Huntingdon Rowdies, Jolly Archers and Huntingdon Town Football Club.
