The heavy snow and freezing weather has already claimed a number of victims with Huntingdon Racecourse’s fixture on Sunday among them.

Track bosses admitted defeat earlier this morning (Friday) in their bid to stage a card headlined by the 188Bet Cambridgeshire National.

“We are sorry but Sunday’s racing has had to be cancelled due to 3cm of snow covering the track,” confirmed a social media post. “Further snow is forecast on Friday and low temperatures look to set into Saturday.”

The weekly Huntingdon Parkrun - held on Saturdays at Hinchingbrooke Country Park - has been called off on safety grounds.

There looks little chance of football action either. Matches involving all five local non-league clubs - St Neots Town, St Ives Town, Godmanchester Rovers, Eynesbury Rovers and Huntingdon Town are all off.

The Cambridgeshire League have cancelled all senior local football matches scheduled for tomorrow, while the Hunts Mini-Soccer League and Hunts Youth League have taken the same decision at junior level.

All St Ives Hockey Club and St Neots Hockey Club games have also been scrapped while Huntingdon Rugby Club has called off all Saturday games, but the club’s hardy souls are going ahead with a Sportsman’s Dinner in the evening in aid of the Wooden Spoon charity.

Table-topping St Ives were hopeful of their home game going ahead yesterday, but that was scuppered by heavy overnight snowfall.
