The source of contamination which has been turning water in a branch of the River Great Ouse near Huntingdon into vivid colours has been traced.

Anglian Water found that the source of the substance, which is not harmful to the environment, was coming from a business on the town’s St Peters Road industrial estate, following a report from a member of the public on Monday.

Investigations into the cause of the pollution are still continuing.

The Environment Agency said: “Following the latest report from a member of the public on Monday, Anglian Water managed to trace the source to a business on St Peters industrial estate and the problem has now been rectified.

“We are now carrying out an investigation into what happened and will consider our enforcement response based on our findings.”

It added: “The contaminant was not considered to be harmful to the environment.”

The Hunts Post told earlier this month how dog walkers had reported the water running emerald green, while there have also been reports of foaming and of diesel in the water.

Fresh footage emerged this week of the water running bright blue, raising fears over possible pollution and harm to wildlife.

A walker who filmed the stream said: “I’ve tried to contact the Environment Agency but the incident is happening again and again. Apparently the river has been in this state for weeks. “

A spokesman for Anglian Water said: “We are working closely with the Environment Agency to identify the source of the blue and green coloured water.

“We would always encourage customers to report any suspicious substances to us so we can investigate as soon as possible. We can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 08457 145 145.”

An environment Agency spokesman said: “We are aware of the pollution incident on the River Ouse and are working with Anglian Water to identify the source.

“The river catchment covers a large area and there are numerous places where the coloured effluent could have come from.

“If people see the river change colour we would urge them to report it to our incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60 stating their location.”
