FLAMBOYANT costumes, colourful floats and dancing in the street are just a few of the attractions planned for Somersham Carnival.

Taking place this Saturday, June 19, the procession will set-off from the Trundle at 12.15pm. The parade will then go down Feoffees Road, The High Street and Parkhall Road to The Norwood Playing Fields at Victory Hall. The floats will arrive to the sound of Jamaican Steel Pan Band Steel Invaders and a Brazilian martial arts display by Group Senzala Capoeira.

This year’s theme is carnival, celebrating the Rio, Mardis Gras and Notting Hill-style carnivals from around the world.

There will be a fantastic variety of designs including mysterious masks, smiling faces, tropical beaches and cheeky characters.

Headdresses and costumes made by Somersham schoolchildren and community groups led by designers and dancers from Luton Carnival will be showcased in the procession.

Leading the procession on the Princess Float will be carnival princess, Libbie Bostock and her attendants Poppy Steward and Katie Thompson, all aged 10.

As part of the carnival, a concert celebrating 30 years of Somersham Town Band will take place tomorrow (Thursday) at St John the Baptist Church at 7.30pm. Tickets cost 5 from 01487 741171.

Sunday’s carnival activities include a family cycle ride leaving from the Victory Hall at 10.45am, a junior five-a-side football tournament at Norwood Playing Fields at 2pm (book on 01487 840137) and a Churches Together celebration at Victory Hall Garden at 5.30pm.
